Recurrent cold and cough in children: when to see a doctor

Frequent cold and cough in children: what is normal, warning signs that need a doctor, common triggers and how homeopathy fits alongside paediatric care.

Young children catch several colds a year, particularly in their first years at nursery or school, as they meet new viruses. Six to eight colds a year is common in young children, and most colds settle on their own within one to two weeks. For parents, though, a child who seems to be ill every few weeks is worrying, and it can be hard to know when a cough or cold needs a doctor.

What is usually expected with a cold

  • A runny or blocked nose, sneezing and a mild cough
  • A low fever for the first few days
  • Being more tired or less hungry than usual, while still drinking
  • A cough that lingers for a week or two after the other symptoms fade

Rest, fluids and comfort are the mainstay. Antibiotics do not help ordinary viral colds and should only be used when a doctor prescribes them.

Why some children get frequent colds

Repeated colds are most often simply the result of new exposure at nursery or school. Other factors can add to them:

  • Smoke at home, including second-hand cigarette smoke
  • Dust, pollution and allergies, which can keep the nose and airways irritated
  • Enlarged adenoids or tonsils, which may cause mouth-breathing and snoring
  • Poor sleep, irregular meals or a stressful period

If a child also wheezes, has a persistent night cough or has eczema, the doctor may consider allergy or asthma rather than repeated infections.

When to see a doctor promptly

  • Fever lasting more than three days, or any fever in a baby under three months
  • Fast or laboured breathing, wheezing, or the skin pulling in between the ribs
  • Ear pain, or discharge from the ear
  • A cough lasting more than three weeks, or coughing fits followed by a whoop or vomiting
  • Drinking much less than usual, or far fewer wet nappies
  • A child who seems to be getting worse rather than better

If a child is floppy, hard to wake, has blue lips or is struggling to breathe, go to a hospital immediately.

Home care during a cold

  • Offer plenty of fluids: water, warm soups and, for babies, frequent feeds
  • Let the child rest; school can wait until the fever has settled
  • Saline drops and gentle wiping can ease a blocked nose
  • Keep the room comfortable and free of smoke, incense and strong fumes
  • Check the temperature and breathing, especially at night

Avoid giving cough and cold medicines to young children unless a doctor has advised them, and never give a child medicine meant for adults.

Keep a record when colds keep coming back

If a child seems to be unwell every few weeks, keep a simple record: dates, symptoms, temperature, medicines given and days missed from school. That record is useful to any doctor who sees the child, and it shows whether the pattern is changing over time.

Questions the doctor may ask

It helps to think about these before the visit: how often the child falls ill and how long each episode lasts; whether colds start with sneezing, a sore throat or a cough; whether the child snores or breathes through the mouth; whether symptoms are worse at night, in cold weather or after particular foods; and how the child sleeps, eats and behaves between illnesses.

Everyday steps that help

  • Regular hand-washing, especially before meals and after school
  • A smoke-free home
  • Regular sleep and balanced meals
  • Keeping routine vaccinations up to date, as advised by the paediatrician

Homeopathic consultation for recurrent cold and cough

At Paras Homeopathy, children are seen with a parent or guardian. The case history covers the child's pattern of illness, triggers, feeding, sleep, sensitivity to cold and behaviour, and the medicine is chosen for the individual child. Homeopathic care is given alongside, not instead of, paediatric care: vaccinations and any treatment the paediatrician prescribes continue as advised. Progress is reviewed at follow-up, and no outcome is promised.

Parents outside Jodhpur can consult online, with the child present on the call.

Common questions

How many colds a year is normal for a child?

Young children commonly have six to eight colds a year, especially in their first years at nursery or school. Most settle within one to two weeks.

When should I take my child to a doctor for a cough?

See a doctor promptly for fever lasting more than three days, any fever under three months of age, fast or difficult breathing, ear pain, a cough lasting more than three weeks, or a child who is getting worse. Go to hospital at once if the child is floppy, hard to wake or has blue lips.

Can homeopathy be given with my child's regular medicines?

Yes. At Paras Homeopathy, homeopathic care is given alongside the child's paediatric care. Vaccinations and any medicine the paediatrician prescribes should continue as advised.

Why does my child keep catching colds?

Usually because of new exposure at nursery or school. Smoke, dust, allergies, enlarged adenoids and poor sleep can add to it. A simple record of each episode helps the doctor find a pattern.
